Urea, phosphate, potash: a guide to how fertilizer reaches the grain price

Grain charts often sit still while the fertilizer market is moving. That gap is not a sign that the shock was small. It is a sign that fertilizer reaches food through a chain of decisions that takes a growing season. This guide explains the three main nutrients, where they come from, and how a supply problem travels to the grain price.

Nitrogen: urea and ammonia are made from gas

Most nitrogen fertilizer starts as ammonia made through the Haber-Bosch process, which uses natural gas as both fuel and feedstock. Urea is the most traded solid form. Because gas is the main cost, nitrogen prices follow gas prices and the cost of moving gas. Producers with cheap gas, including several Gulf countries, are large urea exporters. Cargoes from the Gulf leave through the Strait of Hormuz, which is why this desk treats Hormuz as a fertilizer door as well as an oil door.

Corn and wheat need heavy nitrogen applications. Soybeans fix much of their own nitrogen. A nitrogen shock therefore pushes on corn and wheat economics more than on soybeans, and it can shift what farmers choose to plant.

Phosphate: rock, acid, and export policy

Phosphate fertilizer is made from mined phosphate rock treated with sulfuric acid. Morocco holds the largest known reserves of phosphate rock. China is a large producer and has restricted phosphate fertilizer exports in recent years to protect domestic supply. Sulfur, a by-product of oil and gas refining, is part of the cost, so refinery disruptions can reach phosphate prices too.

Potash: a few mines, a few countries

Potash is mined potassium salt. Canada is the largest producer, and Russia and Belarus are also major suppliers. Supply is concentrated in a small number of mines, so sanctions, rail problems, or port bottlenecks in one country can move the global price. Potash is applied less often than nitrogen, which lets farmers skip a season when prices spike, at the cost of soil reserves later.

How a fertilizer shock travels to grain

The chain has four steps. First, fertilizer prices rise or cargoes arrive late. Second, farmers decide how much to apply before planting, and some cut rates or switch crops. Third, lower application shows up as lower yields at harvest, months later. Fourth, the grain balance tightens if stocks were not large enough to absorb the shortfall. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s monthly WASDE report is where those balances are tracked through stocks-to-use ratios.

Inventories are the buffer at the last step. While stocks are comfortable, grain prices can stay quiet through a fertilizer shock. Once the buffer has been drawn down, the same shortfall moves prices quickly. That is what this desk means when it says fertilizer is the lag and grain is quiet until the buffer is used.

The 2021 urea-solution shortage in Korea

Korea saw how concentrated nitrogen supply can be in late 2021. When China restricted urea exports, Korea faced a shortage of urea solution, the additive diesel trucks need for their exhaust systems, and logistics companies worried about trucks being unable to run. The episode was about road transport, not grain, but it showed the same mechanism: a policy change in one supplier country reached daily life within weeks because there was little buffer.

What to watch

Watch benchmark urea prices in the Middle East and at New Orleans, phosphate export policy in China, potash logistics out of Canada and the Baltic, and the timing of planting seasons. A missed application window cannot be repaired later in the same season. Then watch stocks-to-use in the WASDE. A fertilizer shock that lands when stocks are already thin is the one that reaches the grocery shelf. This desk stays constructive on agriculture for that reason, alongside gold and silver.
